Attention All Veterans

May 7, 2012 | No Responses

Thinking about using your VA benefits for buying a home.  There are some great opportunities available to Veterans, including a $10,000 grant to those who qualify.  Being a former Marine and a Vietnam Veteran, I enjoy helping Vets find a home.   If you are a Veteran and are thinking about buying, the Chiles Team can help you.  It’s important to know when you are looking for a home it needs to meet certain VA standards.  Here are some things to remember:

  • No fixer-uppers – property must be in good condition
  • Plumbing must be in working order
  • No exposed wiring
  • Kitchen must be intact, but appliances aren’t required
  • Floor must be covered
  • Bathrooms must be intact and in working order
  • No broken windows
  • Swimming pools must be clean and operational
  • No foundation issues
  • Roof must be in good condition
  • No chipped or peeling paint
  • Heating system and hot water heater must be operational
  • Air conditioning is not required, but if AC is present it must work
  • Condos with Home Owner Associations are okay but must be VA approved
  • Termite report must be clear or if there is damage, the damage must be repaired prior to closing

I’m always surprised at how many Veterans have never used their home loan benefit.  To all the Vets – thanks for your service – and it please know it would be our pleasure to serve you.
